Finally! A course which helps staff identify common reading & spelling difficulties & how to effectively support children experiencing these, in order to increase their chances of achieving ARE.
Children with SEND will only achieve ARE for phonics, reading and spelling if staff can spot the signs of difficulty, identify what might be causing them and put appropriate teaching strategies in place.
This is increasingly important now, with long waits for children to access SEN specialists.
Unfortunately, many staff (including some with considerable experience) have not had access to appropriate training and have gaps in their knowledge. This is likely to be having a negative impact on the progress children with SEND are making with phonics, reading & spelling and the chances of them achieving ARE in these aspects of the curriculum.
This 2 part online after school workshop will change this by improving practitioner knowledge and understanding of a variety of reading & spelling difficulties, so they can spot the signs, know how to get a diganosis and put effective teaching strategies into place. This will help improve phonics, reading and spelling outcomes for children with SEND.
Training Dates and Times:
Part 1 is on Thursday 13th March and part 2 on Thursday 27th March. Both take place after school on Zoom from 3.45 - 5.15pm. If you are interested in future dates, please contact me.

Course Description:
During the workshops practitioners will participate in a range of activities to help them understand & identify some of the common reading & spelling difficulties children experience. Effective techniques for supporting children will be shared, many of which can be implemented without additional adults. Practitioners will be provided with links to further information/resources they can utilise moving forwards.
The training will be particularly useful for:
- Reception, KS1 & KS2 teachers (including ECTs and trainees), TAs and other practitioners working with children with reading/spelling difficulties
- Phonics Leaders
- Literacy Subject Leaders.

Course Leaders:
The course is being run by Emma Saunders and Lesley Clarke.
Emma is a SENCO in a primary school with high levels of SEND, an Advanced Skills Teacher for teaching & learning and a dyslexia specialist with a diploma in SpLD (Dyslexia)
Lesley has been an early literacy consultant (specialising in the teaching of phonics) for over 20 years, was an infant class teacher for over 25 years and is the author of one of the DfE validated SSP programmes.
