Lesley Clarke's Letters and Sounds very closely aligns with the teaching order in Letters and Sounds 2007. Details of the very minor adjustments can be found below:

Phase 2:

The content of each week is the same as 2007 LaS, with the following exceptions:

  • The content of week 5 has been split over weeks 5 & 6 (as it was previously too much to cover in week 5)
  • Week 7 has been added as a revision week.
  • The independent spelling of the tricky words 'the' and 'to' has been moved to the beginning of Phase 3. However, the spelling of these is still modelled in Phase 2.

Phase 3+:

The content of each week is the same as 2007 LaS, with the following exceptions:

  • 'ure' has been removed from the programme (however, 'ture' is taught as an ending within Phase 5c).
  • The weeks for reading the tricky words 'he' and 'she' have been swapped, so 'she' is taught in the same week as 'sh', which makes it less tricky!)
  • An extra week has been added in between weeks 2 & 3 to tackle letter names and capital letters.
  • The spelling of words ending k/ck, s/ss, f/ff, l/ll is explicitly taught.
  • Words ending in 's' and 'es' are explicitly taught
  • No CCVC/CVCC words are included (until plurals in week 9)

Phase 4+:

The content of each week is the same as 2007 LaS, with the following additions:

  • Week 5 has been added with a focus on words containing 5 sounds.
  • Weeks 6 & 7 have been added to incorporate some of the additional reading requirements of the NC:
    • Reading words ending in 'est', 've', 'ed'
    • Reading contractions ending n't, 'll, 've

Phase 5a:

The content is the same as 2007 LaS, with the following amendments:

  • The content is spread over 5 weeks, instead of 4 (as the pace was previousy too fast). There is also the option of an additional revision week at the end.
  • /zh/ has been moved to later in the programme, where there are more words that can be read and spelled.

NB: For schools using Lesley's previous Phase 5 MT planning, the week by week breakdown (MT plan) is the same.

Phase 5b:

The content is the same as 2007 LaS, with the following amendments:

  • The content is spread over 6 weeks, instead of 3 (as the pace was previousy too fast).
  • 'le' has been added, as it is in a lot of decodable texts at this stage and the children have already learned to use it when spelling the tricky word 'little'.

NB: For schools using Lesley's previous Phase 5 MT planning, the week by week breakdown (MT plan) is the same, with the addition of an extra week on the end.

Phase 5c:

The content is the same as 2007 LaS and retains the focus on 'best bets' for spelling for each phoneme. However, the following amendments have been made:

  • The content is spread over 20 weeks, instead of 23.
  • 'ge' has been added (part of the KS1 spelling NC and a common representation of /j/).
  • 'ze' and 'ce' have been added. Although not in the KS2 spelling NC, they are common representations of /z/ and /s/.
  • /sh/ represented by 's' and in the ending 'cial' have been removed, as very few words contain them.
  • /zh/ represented by 'ge' and in the ending 'sual' have been removed, as very few words contain them.

NB: For schools using Lesley's previous Phase 5 MT planning, the week by week breakdown (MT plan) is virtually the same, with the exception of the last 2 bullet points above and the moving of 've' to Phase 4.
