Poems for LaS Matched to Little Wandle LaS Revised

The phonics poems on this page have been matched to the book sets for each phase in the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. The poems are ideal for schools who follow this programme, but are wishing to add poems to the range of texts their children can read independently at each Phase.

The phonics poem downloads for each phase (see below) can be used in different ways:

  • As texts for shared reading with the whole class.
  • As texts to use as models for writing in literacy lessons. Poems with patterns are particularly useful for this purpose.
  • As texts for guided/1:1 reading. Select a poem that contains the phonic elements a group needs to practise, as well as being at a suitable book band for the children to be able to read at instructional level (90-95% accuracy).
  • As texts to take home.
  • As texts for your reading corner.

The poems can be used in different formats:

  • Electronically: suitable for whole class shared reading or guided/1:1 reading on laptops/tablets.
  • Printed out onto card (some poems are longer and will need to be double sided) and laminated, so each child has a copy in front of them during a guided/1:1 reading session. These can then be kept in school with other guided reading texts.
  • Photocopied onto paper, hole punched and put into a ‘phonics poems’ folder for each child (a sample front cover is provided). This can be added to during the year. The children could keep their phonics poem folders in their drawer/take them home in their book bags and enjoy re-reading poems (one of the NC objectives). You could make a class one with all the graphemes covered in phonics lessons and leave it in the reading corner, updating regularly with additional new poems as new graphemes are learned.

The advantages of printable reading materials:

  • They are cheaper than published books, even with a similar amount of text at the earliest reading levels.
  • If a text gets damaged/lost, you can just print another one.
  • You can use them on tablets without having to pay an annual fee.
  • You can use them for whole class shared reading (again without having to pay an annual fee).
  • They can be kept by children (eg in a phonics poems folder) and re-read.
  • You can print them onto different coloured backgrounds for children who need this.

Feedback:

General comments:

'The children loved these sessions. They were all engaged and had lots to talk about.'

'Children were engaged by the poems and liked looking at the pictures.'

'All children were really engaged throughout the session.'

Impact after a week's trial:

'Children’s motivation to read definitely increased that week and I was pleasantly surprised to see how engaged and motivated the children on Phase 2 were.'

Answers to the question: 'Would you consider using these/similar poems regularly to support your teaching of phonics? Why/why not?'

'Definitely! They are short and engaging and cover the Year 1 sounds very well. These would be great for decoding, identifying sounds and comprehension.'

'Yes because it’s time efficient and you can check their phonetic knowledge within minutes rather than reading a whole guided reading book.'

'Yes I would as all children were engaged in the sessions.'

Phonics Poems Matched to Little Wandle: Samples

This download contains sample poems from Phases 2, 3, 4 & 5 matched to The Little Wandle LaS Revised programme and accompanying teachers' notes.

Choose a poem that is from the right phonics phase for your class and try using it for shared reading - you may find you can use it as a model for children to innovate on and create their own poems during literacy lessons (NB: Where tricky words are involved, you would need to have covered the spelling of that tricky word and this often happens in the following phase). Alternatively choose a poem that is at instructional level for a group of children/individual child and use it for a guided or 1:1 reading session.

If the poems work well for you, do let others know about them. You may consider buying the rest of a set to use with your class too.
