Lesley was working as both an infant class teacher and literacy consutant (specialising in the teaching of phonics) when LaS 2007 was published. She worked as a CLLD consultant in West London, supporting schools to implement the 2007 LaS programme and realised very soon that staff needed additional resources to teach it effectively.

She created this website to provide some of those much needed resources. Schools found Phase 5 particularly difficult to implement, so Lesley created a MT plan for this phase outlining content to be taught each week and slghtly extending the timescales of Phase 5a & b. This plan has been followed by many schools ever since. She went on to create weekly planning and resources for this phase which have been used by a number of schools and were included in the DfE Matched Phonics Funding Catalogues some years ago (along with some of Lesley's other LaS resources). Phase 6 plans were created shortly afterwards, in response to requests from teachers.

Lesley has provided training on aspects of LaS for over 14 years, always focussing on improving the delivery of the programme and providing practical advice on how to do this. A great many schools have chosen to support their teaching of LaS over the last 14 years by using Lesley's resources and attending her training sessions.

When the DfE announced the validation process last spring, Lesley decided to bring together all her resources to create an entire SSP programme and wrote weekly planning and resources for Phases 2-4 and interventions to complete it. She has also written a set of over 100 fully decodable poems, matched to the programme, with a large number of texts at the early levels to support beginner readers.  These new resources were trialled by a number of teachers last summer with the full programme being trialled in a few schools from September 2021.

Staff found Lesley’s planning to be incredibly useful in ensuring delivery of the phase was appropriately paced, well-sequenced and, most importantly, fun and engaging for all mainly due to the active and involved nature of the sessions. We noticed out children’s progress really accelerated during the time we were using Lesley’s work…… – they were inspired!’
