Buried Treasure (Reading)

Free printable golden coin, dustbin and treasure chest for playing Buried Treasure. Laminate the coins, write a word on each containing a vowel digraph your child needs to practise (some should be real words and some nonsense). Bury them in the garden/sand pit etc. When your child pulls one out, get him/her to sound out and read the word. If it's a real word, he/she puts it on the treasure box and if it's nonsense, puts it on the dustbin.

Ensure that your child sounds out and reads each word, rather than just dragging the words to a dragon to see what happens!

Pick a Picture (Reading)

Sentence Substitution (Reading)

Get your child to read the sentence on the screen (sounding out any words he/she needs to). Your or he/she can select one of the word cards along the bottom of the screen and lie it over one of the existing words in the sentence. Get your child to read the new sentence. You can have some fun making up silly sentences!

Select the game you wish to play, using the graphemes your child needs to practise. Push the fruit machine button to generate the first word. Get your child to blend and read it before looking for the word on their board.

Picture Matching Cards (Reading)

Sets of pictures with matching words cards (1 of the set deals specifically with sh, ch, th, ng). Print out the sheets and cut into individual word and picture cards.Get your child to sound out each word and find the matching picture.

Using 'ck' or 'k' (Writing)

using ck or kA You Tube video explaining when to use 'ck' or 'k' at the ends of words. Children need to know this from the time they start learning graphemes, such as 'ai', 'ee' etc. Not my preferred way of explaining the rule, but it is certainly a good option.

Call out a word containing a grapheme your child needs to practise), get your child to break down (orally segment) the sounds on his/her fingers. Then he/she clicks on the corresponding letters to make the word appear on the whiteboard. Get him/her to sound out and read the word written to check it is correct and amend if necessary.

Foam Phonemes (Writing)

Then he/she clicks on the corresponding letters on the left of the screen to fire them out of the cannon and then re-arranges on the water to make the word. Get him/her to sound out and read the word written to check it is correct and amend if necessary.
